No , !!! dimmer switches are not made for motors such as in fans. Dimmers are made for light bulbs not motors. A dimmer reduces voltage and you DO not want this for a motor at all.
With out getting technical dimmers are magnetic and coil type and this is why they vary. But you need a Ceiling fan control for a fan and a dimmer for lights. I know people will say hey it works but what damage is it doing to the fan and or the dimmer. They do not last long.
