The original inspirations for the setting of the TV show Cheers was a favorite neighbor-hood bar. The original name was Bull & Finch Pub. No replica of the exterior of the Hampshire House was made in Hollywood. In the opening shots of the series as well as when the show returns from commercial breaks you see the real exterior of the Hampshire House at 84 Beacon Street.

As you walk inside you will see it does not look like the bar on the set, however, there are many similarities. The producers copied everything about the bar except they needed to have an island bar instead of a wall bar because the show was going to be shot in front of a live audience and in front of four cameras. Most of the action would be at either end of the bar. Norm’s seat was on the right-hand side of the bar and Frasier and Lilith hung out on the left-hand side of the bar.

The entrance to the pub on the set and in real life is the same. You will see the friendly Indian, and three steps coming down into the bar area with its original red brick walls just the same as on the show. You will also notice the diamond glass windows, the colorful Tiffany lamps, and the same style benches, tables and chairs.

As you continue looking around, you will see that there is a hallway that leads back to the restrooms and to a backroom, which is much like on the TV show. The only difference between the back room of the pub and that of the TV show set is that the pool table in the “real” Cheers back room is a miniature that is affixed to their ceiling to provide enough room for patrons who are hungry for the food served at the pub.

Another huge difference between the bar on the set and the original inspiration is that the “real” Cheers, Beacon Hill has added a couple of souvenir shops. The souvenir shop was added when people began to realize that the Bull & Finch Pub was the inspiration for the TV show “Cheers,” they looked for a souvenir to take back home with them. People wanted the ashtrays, the matches, the menus. Cheers, Beacon Hill still notes there is a barmaid missing. They decided to do something about it and added the souvenir shop. They started with T-shirts and posters, but now provide a full array of souvenirs including other apparel items, glassware, and trinkets. The shops are kept very well stocked with sizes, colors and variations.

Cheers Beacon Hill is located at 84 Beacon Street, in Boston, Massachusetts. They are located directly across from the Public Garden. You can find them also by looking for the beige awing and the “Cheers” flag.
