We know them as warriors, peaceful, proud, driven, conflicted, hunters, farmers, people who were native to the American soil, way before the Europeans, or any white man, for that matter, set foot on their continent.

The first inhabitants of the American continent are often referred to as ‘Indians’, or ‘Native Americans’. They were a fierce kind of people with their culture, their stories, legends and myths, known all over the world. Every history buff can tell you about the cruel battles amongst the tribes, as well as, the desperate fight for freedom, and the downfall by ‘fire water’, and their worst enemy: the ‘pale faces’.

Through the ages, the media has tried to spread awareness, and keep us in the loop about the enduring struggles of the North American Indian, but what the press has kept a secret, is that the ‘Red Skins’ no longer live restricted to one continent. They have spread their eagle wings and today, there are many residents in Germany claiming to be of Indian descent.

It is actually very easy to explain. When the Europeans defeated the Apache, Cherokee, Cheyenne, Iroquois, Kiowa, Navajo, Shawnee, and many more, they took some of their captured slaves back to their home country. More tribe members arrived after WWII, when some Native American soldiers decided to stay, and bring their family members over, after they settled.

In 1994, The Native American Association of Germany (NAAoG) was formed, with the goal to provide a meeting point for Native Americans living, or temporarily stationed by US Military in Europe. They are just one of the many organizations uniting the German Indian.

Like the tribes in the US and Canada, the European societies also hold tipi-camps, powwows, sweat lodges, make their jewelry and crafts, and have their Shaman and medicine men. They use every opportunity they can get, to gather and inform the public about the diversity of the Native American nations. Coming from Austria, Switzerland, and other parts of Europe, they hold meetings, and bring over real-blood guest speakers from the prairies or desert.

Experts say that, partially to blame for this European “Indian culture obsession” is an author by the name of Karl Friedrich May, (February 25, 1842 – March 30, 1912). He was one of the best selling German writers, of all time. He mostly wrote about the American Old West, as well as stories set in his native Germany. For his novels with an American setting, May created the fictional characters of a wise Apache chief, called Winnetou, and Old Shatterhand, the chief’s alter ego and white blood brother. Many of these novels were turned into successful movies and TV series, which also fascinated me during my several years living in the European Union. Karl May’s work was always deeply rooted in the belief, that all of mankind should live together peacefully. Every single one of his main characters avoided killing, except when it was absolutely necessary to save lives. It was a peaceful way of thinking, one we should applaud, and all live by, especially in today’s world, where violence seems to escalate, more and more.

I recently acquired a piece of Shawnee pottery.?

It’s flesh colored and white with a fluted edge. It has the word “Shawnee Usa” imprinted in the bottom and also the numbers 2502. My mother swears this is worth something. Does anyone know how much?

Isn’t Google wonderful?
