Most people in this world have a habit of being late, I find. That’s true of most Hispanics who take my English as a Second Language classes, the Chinese-Americans I knew, the Koreans who swore they were always punctual but who showed up late to scheduled online classes, the American born and raised students I taught in the local college, most of my relatives (again American born and raised) and who got very peeved when I was the one who was late, people from Brazil who think you’re not really late unless it’s two hours or more past the appointed time, folks from most parts of the Arabic speaking world — according to several students of ESL and sociology and anthropology from various parts of this world, again almost invariably late to class. Most of my students from Africa (not many) were also late to class, so we just didn’t do anything significant in the first 15 minutes. I gave extra credit for those brave few who DID show up. Most of my employers ranted and raved about their employees not showing up on time but it never did any good. People kept right on not showing up on time. Most of the buses I rode didn’t show up on time either. The later they were, the more people were on board. That suggests to me that most people at bus stops are also late. I had a granny who was chronically late. She even showed up late to her only daughter’s wedding. Her own father remarked at the reception that everybody ought to go ahead and start eating and not wait for the mother of the bride. “If we wait for Estelle, the soup will get cold!” he stated. So we all started eating and, true to form, the mother of the bride was over an hour late. She was also miffed that we hadn’t waited for her. But, yes indeed, that soup would have been ice cold if we had waited.

So go and be late but tell everybody to go ahead and start eating without you so that their soup won’t get cold. Then they won’t mind so much that you’re late!
