People have been taking light outside for as long as they’ve had gardens. It’s hardly surprising. Gardens are nice places to be after dark in summer. You can bet your bottom dollar the Hanging Gardens of Babylon had ranks of state-of-the-art torches so the court could savour its delights in the cool of the desert night.

But technology has moved on since then. Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, one of London’s most popular entertainments from the mid 17th century to the mid 19th century, were lit by hundreds of oil lamps. More recently we’ve had the good old incandescent light bulb beside millions of our front doors and on millions of our patios. Yet even as lighting technologies evolved, the effect they created remained remarkably similar: what you got was a pool of yellowish light.

Then came the halogen dichroic lamp – the lamps used in all those downlighters recessed into our ceilings. The halogen dichroic lamp moved lighting on by a leap and a bound. The lamps are small, so the fittings to house them can be compact and discreet. Halogen light is cool and crisp, and its colour rendition is superb: shine halogen light at a lush green shrub and it looks lush and green, rather than grey. Best of all, the dichroic reflector focuses the light into a tight beam. Suddenly, you could point the beam at the things you wanted to light, and leave in darkness the things you didn’t.

This ability to use a focused beam to paint with light and shade is the essence of contemporary garden lighting schemes. You can uplight or backlight trees and shrubs to evoke a sense of drama or accentuate their architectural qualities. You can uplight or downlight walls with sharply defined cones of light to create a complex geometry. You can throw horizontal beams of light across paving and steps without glare or light spill. You can wash horizontal surfaces like walls and fences to accentuate their textural qualities. And because halogen dichroic lamps give you a choice of four beam widths, you can pinpoint an object like a planter or sculpture with a narrow 10º beam, or light a larger area such as the crown of a tree with a 60º beam. You can even experiment with coloured lenses. The possibilities to be creative are almost endless.

Halogen lamps require a low voltage (12 volt) electricity supply. This is an ideal power source for the garden because it is safe, even if you accidentally cut a cable with a spade. By contrast, 240 volt cables should be armoured and buried to at least two spades’ depth. For anyone with an average sized garden, that’s a lot of digging. You need one or more transformers to reduce the voltage to 12 volts, but these can be placed out of the way in a shed, greenhouse or garage, or even buried in the soil.

Halogen dichroic lamps are also more energy efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs. The light output of a 20 Watt halogen lamp is more than a match for a 40 Watt incandescent light bulb. But for the many people worried about climate change, even a 20 Watt lamp may be 20 Watts too much. If so, you might consider substituting a 12 volt LED for the dichroic lamp. Like dichroic halogen lamps, these project a focused beam of light, but they use just 5 Watts, so you can, for example, run 12 LED fittings for the same amount of energy as one old-fashioned 60 Watt incandescent light bulb. Their light output is less than a 20 Watt halogen lamp’s, but it’s perfectly adequate for smaller gardens. The light quality is good, too. Which means you can sit back, relax and enjoy your garden at night with a clearer conscience – and a smaller electricity bill.
