If you are like many people, the nightmare of setting up lights at Christmas is still fresh in your memory. Not only do you have to untangle these bundles of lights each year but then you have to hassle with electrical cords, outside outlets or running the power cord into your home. However, today you can purchase solar Christmas lights that will take care of much of the problem. These wonderful lights don’t require outlets or tangles of cords to function properly.

Solar Christmas lights come fully equipped with a small solar panel that you place in a sunny area of your yard. In this respect, they work much like solar powered lights for your garden. This power is then stored in a battery to light the solar Christmas lights when the sun goes down. The PV solar panel generally comes with a built-in sensor that will turn your lights on and off for you.

Solar Panel

The power source for your solar lights is of course the sun. However, the potential energy from the sun’s rays must be gathered and then stored for later use. This is the purpose and function of the photovoltaic solar panel. When you think of solar panels you may have in mind large arrays that people have installed on the roofs of their homes or businesses, while the two are similar in process the PV cell for your solar Christmas lights is nowhere near that large.

Inside these PV cells is semiconductor material such as silicon that absorbs the energy from the sun. This causes a lot of electron movement along the circuit within the panel, creating electricity. However, that electricity needs somewhere to go, and battery storage is the best option.

Basically, your solar panel is attached to a nickel-metal hydride, NiMH, battery through a diode. The captured electricity then flows from the panel into the battery for later usage. This process will continue as long as the sun is shining on the solar cells.

Generally speaking, the batteries that come with these systems are rated for around 16 hours of use. However, if you have a cloudy or overcast day and the sun does not produce a lot of energy you can expect around 8 hours worth of charge.

In most cases that is still more than enough charge for the lights – that is unless you plan to stay up all night looking at them!

Sensor

Built into the system is a sensor that detects light levels, as it begins to get dark outside this sensor will trigger a controller board which will turn your lights on until the sun rises the next morning.

Though solar Christmas lights may seem like a novel idea, solar panels themselves have been in use for many years in tiny applications. Just look at your calculator, they have been solar powered for a decade or better!

What Batteries do Solar lights use?

I have some Solar Lights in my garden and would like to know if the batteries in them are rechargeable or normal ones please?
The original batteries are light green, AA size. The markings on them say:
“AA 700mAh 1.2V
NI-MH BATTERY”
If they are rechargeable, are they suitable to put in a normal battery recharger? (i.e.. One that takes, AA, AAA, PP3 Batteries.)

They are rechargeable batteries, I have charged mine with a battery charger before and ive never had any problem with them, hope this helps
