In 636 AD, the Arabs invaded and conquered Ctesiphon, Persia (during the period of Islamic expansion). Each conquered country’s valuables – were systemically assessed.

An incredible Persian carpet was discovered.

It had belonged to the Sassanian King Khusrau 1, (531-579 AD). The very size of the carpet was impressive: 450 feet long X 90 feet width.

What the Carpet Depicted Astounded the Arabs

One must take into account: what the Persian climate was. Extremely hot temperatures; intense dust storms, vast arid elevated plains – devoid of vegetation and water – for endless miles and miles. The sight of king Khusrau 1′s, Paradesios spring garden was a enchanting and welcoming contrast – the portrayed theme of the carpet.

A Paradeisos Garden

Was a high-walled, large royal estate, dedicated to the a lush garden whose presence provided an micro-climate. Spring bulbs in Persia bloomed in magnificence. The sight, scent and sound of of a garden were the sought delights to create a spiritual oasis. Also, a hunting park was an indispensable annexe to a Paradeisos garden. Persian gardens originated from Egyptian and Greek gardens.

A rectangle was planted with fruit-bearing trees in symmetrical order. Centre-piece was dedicated to the glory-explosion of spring bulb colours and perfumes. That centre was edged by other flower beds – for later blooms. Never-ending fountains, runnels and streams of water divided the garden into distinct sections.

Overlooking, extensive, covered-walkways surrounded the palace, affording, peaceful contemplation of the Paradeisos garden’s beauty.

The Garden Theme held More than Nature Appreciation for the Arabs…

The carpet’s theme of “Paradise” was remarkably similar to that referred to – in the Qur’an. A life-after-death “allegorical home” for the faithful of the Qur’an: A Garden of Paradise.

Moorish Water Gardens

King Khusrau 1′s carpet laid the cornerstone of how Moorish Water Gardens would be created from that point on in the Islamic world and that garden concept travelled wherever Islam reached, reaching Spain in 711 AD.

The Moorish Garden design was a rectangle, with a centre-point fountain, or reflecting pool, or a tomb such as the Taj Majhal, symbolises the Chahar-Bahr. Water spilled and rippled into four different directions – representing the Four Rivers of Life. Each water runnel would create a separate garden section which equally represented the Four Earthly Foods of Paradise.
