Studies have shown that in a well-lit, properly structured public area, with sufficient public traffic, criminals will hesitate to commit crimes. The reason for this is not that the opportunity for crime didn’t exist, or even that escape was not possible, but because the criminals were afraid of being witnessed carrying out their crimes. Bear in mind that human beings cannot record an incident of criminal activity, or transmit those images to a remote location as video surveillance can.

Video surveillance began in the 1960s as closed circuit television. These systems were used primarily by banks in order to identify bank robbers. In the 1970s, the development of video recording equipment resulted in an explosion of surveillance cameras in convenience stores and gas stations, both the target of robbers. The video recording equipment meant that an incident of criminal activity could be captured for evidence. The drawback was that as the owners of these stores became complacent, they forgot to replace old tapes. In some cases the machines didn’t even have a tape.

A later technical development; the video camera attached to a high capacity hard drive, solved that problem, although some older video systems still exist today. The improvement in picture quality as a result of digital cameras and storage creates an image that can be more effective for identification purposes, as well as more compelling as evidence in the courtroom.

Aside from technical advances in both digital cameras and storage, there have been a number of improvements in the area of video surveillance. These include the development of reliable and accurate motion detectors. A motion detector will allow the video equipment to function when there is movement in a sensitive area. This makes both the issue of image storage and the review of those images much easier.

Another huge step forward was the incorporation of infrared imaging into security surveillance systems. Infrared imaging was originally a military technology that allows the viewer to clearly see a target in total darkness. What this improvement means is that the use of darkness as a cover for criminal activity can be largely defeated.

It is possible for an individual to assemble and build a video surveillance system of their own. The feed from the video cameras can even be sent to a remote location on the Internet, to prevent the evidence itself from being stolen. The big advantage of a homemade system is in the cost savings, as well as the ability of the home owner to customize the system to exactly what they want.

The biggest disadvantage, when compared to a professional security service, is the lack of response capability from security personal or police at the time of the crime. Depending on what may be at risk of being stolen, this could be a crucial issue. If there is also a risk of home invasion, some kind of third party response may very well be an important priority.

The use of video surveillance systems in banks and businesses has clearly shown both the deterrent capacity and the ability of these systems to capture evidence. A video surveillance system in your home can offer you an additional layer of security. Don’t fool yourself; doors and windows still have to be locked, lighting issues considered and hiding places from which criminals can stage their crimes eliminated or modified. As part of an overall security strategy however, video surveillance can play a useful and important role.

People who work at concert venues?

I’m sure there are specific names/job titles for these people, but I’m just not sure what. I’m talking about those people who set up the band’s equipment on stage at concerts, check that the microphones are working, that the guitars are properly tuned, the drums are good, the lighting is right, etc. Sure, there are several people working on these, but I need specific names for those jobs, their title. Does anyone know?

That would be the road crew…..or roadies. They usually travel from show to show with the band. That’s the generic term for the whole group. I’m sure they would have all have individual specific job titles as well, depending on what they specifically do.
