As I stated in my first article, there are 3 stages of emotional pain: childhood, adolescent, and adult. It is impossible to go through life without compiling some emotional wounds. Parents, teachers, friends and family, all have their ways of inflicting pain into our lives. Sometimes it’s intentional, sometimes not; most of the time it has to do with how we respond to the experience.

To review the 3 stages: childhood emotional pain occurs when we are young. Children are known for being like sponges, they absorb everything around them. Depending what their environment is like, what they are absorbing can be very wounding emotionally to them. As this child grows, it takes the same pain into the teenage years and builds on it, becoming adolescent pain, the second stage. What may have started out as name calling and being made fun of now becomes more violent and physical abusive, perhaps even rape. Entering into adulthood, the same pain now gets piled higher and thicker, and the emotional wounds from childhood and adolescence do not go away on their own-they become adult pain, the third stage.

As I considered childhood pain in the last article, this time let me consider adolescent pain. Physically many things are happening in the bodies of teenagers, but it is true emotionally as well. What things they saw and experienced as children are now being interpreted through peer pressure, hormones, dating, high school, sports and the media. Girls who were never touched the right way as a child might be willing to be touched the wrong way as a teen. Boys who witnessed abuse by their fathers may feel they have permission to act that way themselves. Extreme crushes and breakups for a teen may simply just be looking for someone to love them for who they are.

Adolescent pain continues to build upon childhood pain and it accumulates In my opinion, I believe it is one of the reasons we see so much anger, violence and shootings in today’s youth. Their “pain tank,” as Jack Frost calls it, has gotten full already as a teenager and they spill out their hurt onto others. They have all this pain and do not know what to do with it; there is no one in their lives demonstrating how to cope with all the emotional hurts.

Fortunately, we have found some incredible tools for helping people with their emotional pain. Prayer ministry lead by the Holy Spirit can help heal the wounding. If a person is willing to face the shame, guilt, anger and fear of looking at the core to this pain, which is usually rooted in childhood events, then freedom can be found.
