How to set the inline switch button on my lamp?

Our glass floor lamp has a button stained great in the middle of the cable on and off. Stopped working I would have to continually press to operate. Sometimes putting a weight on it for stay, but it is annoying to put it in and out and sometimes falls. Is there an easy way to solve this problem for someone who knows nothing about electrical components? Are not you think it is okay to place great weight on it and keep it there and then use one of those extension cords with a switch on it? Why put a weight on it to make the button stay in the bad guys? Is it an electrical hazard?
