First they need a small, separate cage with a heating lamp, the lamp warms only 1 side of the cage, so if it gets too warm the babies can move away from it.

If the babies are about 1 week old, they have to be fed every 3 hours, even through the night. The hand feeding formula, for example “KAYTEE”, mixed to a very thin liquid with warm water will be fed with a syringe, I use an insulin syringe, of course you take the needle off.

When the crop is full you just clean the peak with a serviette, to avoid bacterias.

As soon as the babies are 3 weeks old the feeding is every 4 hours, starting 6 am, last feeding 12 midnight. A string of spray millets clipped inside of the cage and a small water dish, gets them to be curious early, to learn to be weaned. Even better if you have a tame adult bird in the same cage. Babies can learn very quickly with an older companion.

Some babies take up to 6 weeks, others start with 4.5 weeks to go on seeds, like canary seeds and the fruit/rice plate. Cockatiels starts with sunflower seeds with about 8 weeks of age. Still, canary seeds should be a 60 % of their diet. The drinking water should have at least 2 x a week some vitamin drops.

Important is to give the birds from 5 weeks of age on a variety of fruits, cooked rice with little salt, shredded carrots, pieces of fresh or defrosted corn, breadcrumbs of whole wheat bread, greens from the garden and more.

The most important: over the whole year they have to have a small bowl of grit, for digestion, and a calcium stone in the cage, for the peak. Best is to use natural branches, no plastic or sand paper branches!!

For birds of a small size, like lovebirds, cockatiels, canaries and finches is recommended to have a cage of 1 m by 1 m, per couple, so they can fly a bit and feel “free”.

The birds which are hand raised usually stay tame and always come to you, learn to whistle songs or learn how to speak.
