The least expensive lighting is found at Home Depot. They are 500 watt construction lamps (about $40). To soften the light you will have to set something in front of the lights.

The next step will cost closer to $150. A Lowel Tota-light with 750 Watt lamp, umbrella and stand is what I use when on location. You can later add a 42 inch 5 in 1 reflector for fill (under $100)

You will also need a background stand (Savage makes one for under $100) for hanging rolls of background paper or four yard lengths of cloth from the $1 table at your favorite yardage store or Wal-Mart
