Everyone has odds and ends of kitchenware laying around, whether it’s in a box in the basement or a cherished piece used only for the most formal family gatherings. But how can you tell if your china has more than sentimental value? Even if it’s an heirloom piece you could never part with, discovering its true worth can fuel dinner party conversations for a few years.

The first thing you want to do is look on the bottom of each piece. Are there any marks? All famous makers have their own symbol or mark they stamp on their wares. You may also find the name of the pattern used. You can find books about them in your local library, but here are a few notable names to start: Belleek, Beswick, Bow, Carlton, Chelsea, Claris Cliff, Denby, Derby, Doulton, Mason, Spode, Sylvac, Wedgwood, and Worcester, to name a few.

The next thing to do is find the date of the piece. Looking up the registration mark can often do this. On some pieces dating from 1842 to 1883, the mark is a diamond shape with the letters ‘R’ and ‘D’ next to it. Other letters at each corner tell you the day, month, and year of manufacture.

If you simply see a number, that is referred to as a ‘registration number’ by collectors and has the same information encoded in it. You can easily look up this information in a collector’s reference guide.

Other tips for dating china:

• Printed marks appear on china made after 1800.
• The name of the pattern and royal arms sometimes appear on British-made goods after 1810.
• The words “Bone China” were not commonly used until after 1844.
• The world “Royal” was first used after 1850.
• The word “Limited” or “Ltd.” first appeared in 1861.
• The words “trademark” appear only on pieces made after 1862.

There is even a market for antique and vintage dinnerware that was used every day. Fiestaware, a colorful terra-cotta pottery brand first popularized in the 1930′s, is highly sought after by dedicated collectors, and was used in homes for daily meals, not just special occasions.

Salemware is often a favorite with mid-century modern enthusiasts due to its “atomic age” graphics and innovative sculptural elements found even in the most humble salt and pepper shaker.

Depression glass was inexpensive dinner and serveware sold at five and dimes during the Great Depression. It was marketed as an affordably chic way to dress up a table without breaking the strict budgets of the era. Now, it can drive a high price at auction.
