Aquariums have been proven to reduce stress and lower blood pressure. As an added bonus, fish-keeping as a hobby is absorbing and calming for even the youngest members of the family. Let’s look at starting a tropical, community aquarium. The term ‘community’ means an aquarium stock with different species of fish that get on well together.

A basic shopping list is: tank or wall aquarium, heater, filter, substrate (gravel or sand), thermometer, water testing kit, filter maturation agent, fishing net, plants, dechlorinator, bucket, siphon, fish food. Note that fish are not yet on the list. The tank / wall aquarium has to settle and mature before you can safely add them. The first item to decide upon is the fish tank / wall aquarium itself. Buy the biggest one you can afford and fit into your home. Small tanks / wall aquariums are harder to maintain and keep healthy.

The heater keeps the water temperature stable and ‘tropical’ should you choose to set your wall aquarium / tank up as a tropical tank. Most tropical fish live at temperatures around 24-25 degrees C.

Lighting enables you to see your fish. But it’s even more important if you wish to grow real plants in your tank or wall aquarium. A simple fluorescent tube marked either T5 or T8 will suffice, but look into alternatives as your hobby grows. Aquaria should be lit for about 10-12 hours a day.

A filter keeps your fish healthy and an internal one, which fits in the tank, is the neatest option. It is a powered unit that contains a filter media, usually a coarse sponge material. Dirty water is drawn over the media where waste is trapped and the cleaned water is pumped back into the tank.

However the filter needs to be matured correctly so ‘friendly’ bacteria colonise it. If you set up a tank or wall aquarium and introduce fish without maturing the filter, the fish will die. Without going the chemistry of what happens in the aquarium, the best way of maturing a filter is to purchase a commercial filter maturation agent from your local retailer.

You’ll also need a water testing kit. It should take about two weeks for the filter to ‘grow’ the right amount of bacteria to deal with the fish waste. This is known as ‘fishless cycling’. Once your new tank / wall aquarium is in place, install the heater and filter but don’t switch them on until the tank is full of water. Next thoroughly rinse the gravel and make a layer approximately 5cm deep in the base of the tank / aquarium. Add decor, such as cleaned rocks or ornaments and fill the wall aquarium / tank with dechlorinated water. When the water is the right temperature, add live plants, making sure they are anchored securely in the substrate. Now add the filter maturation starter and follow the the instructions on the kit. You usually have to test the water daily until optimum levels have been reached inside the aquarium.

While you’re waiting for your new tank / aquarium to cycle, you can start planning which fish to buy! Take note of their maximum size, feeding and heating requirements and never impulse buy. This can have disastrous consequences if you discover that your new, seemingly peaceful fish will eat only it’s live tank mates.

Once the tank / aqaurium is fully cycled you can add your fish. Acclimatise the new fish to the tank by opening the bag and rolling down the top down a little, then floating the bag in the tank. Add a little aquarium water to the bag every few minutes for the next 30 minutes, then remove the fish from the bag with a net and introduce them to their new home. Dispose of the bag of polluted water and keep the lights off for about an hour to let the fish settle into it’s new aquarium.

Now sit back and enjoy a new type of reality show.
