I want to install down lights in the kitchen (Australia) and I want to use the ones that are on a track system and have those small transformers (not the big black transformers). What is the maximum number of 50w down lights that can be installed, safely. I see you can get in the shops a set which has 4 lights on it. Can one standard switch (not a dimmer switch) handle 2 sets of four lights (ie 8 down lights) or is this not advisable.

the switch will have a max ampere rating, here in the US i have seen them rated for 15 A, some @ 20 A…. but you never want to load it to full capacity, 80 percent is the rule of thumb.

what is Australian voltage? 120 or 240?

here’s a formula

watts = volts X amps

so… 15 amps X 240V = 3600 watts

3600 X 80 percent =2880 watts

2880 watts divided by 50 watts (each bulb) is 57 bulbs

…..at 120 volts and 50 watt lights the max would be 28 bulbs
