The key word in remodeling any part of your home is improvement. You always ask yourself the question: will this make my home more comfortable, more user-friendly and potentially add more resale value? One thing throughout your home that has this potential is changing the lighting. Good lighting makes a room inviting and can make it look larger. The entire mood of a room can be altered with lighting. In sufficient lighting makes a room feel small, cramped and uncomfortable. This is something to keep in mind when looking for a new home. Really look at the lighting sources. If a room seems impossible to work with, ask yourself if it’s just the lighting and how it can be changed.

There are three basic types of lighting. The first is general lighting. General lightening is meant to be the replacement for the sun indoors. This type of lighting uses chandeliers, light/fan combos, wall-mounted lighting, recessed or track lights and even the lights outside your home. The purpose is to make it easy and comfortable moving about. It’s only purpose is safety. It’s solely utilitarian. One exception to this is candles. Before electricity, they were the only source of interior light we had, except for the fireplace. Candles can be used as a sole source of light, task lighting and accent lighting.

Another type of lighting is task lighting. It is to provide light for specific activities such as reading, cooking, hobbies or homework. It is provided by recessed or track lighting, pendant lights or portable table lamps. Task lighting has come a long way. What used to be Gramma’s lamp covered in plastic (to protect it from what, I don’t know) has morphed into part of the décor of the room.

A third type of lighting is accent lighting. It provides drama to the room by focusing on a particular space. It can be used to highlight a particular piece of art, a houseplant, or a sculpture. It is also used outside to accent particular trees or other landscaping. It usually requires three times the light to make it stand out against the generally lighting. But the effect is unmistakable. It naturally draws your eye to whatever it is highlighting.

Changing the lighting is an easy way to change the mood of a room. That’s why dimmer switches are great. A room can go from general purpose to cozy and romantic with one push of the switch!
