For most people, including myself, the lawn is the most important feature in the garden. If the lawn looks good, then chances are the rest of the garden will also look good. A decision that we all have to make when contemplating making a new lawn is whether to use seed or turf.

I would recommend seeding whenever possible for it costs about a quarter the money that buying turf does, and the preparatory work for both is just about the same. If the area to be grassed is not very large and there are children in the family which would be difficult to keep off seeded ground, then turfing is probably a better choice.

Before you start with laying down new turf or seeds on a new garden, you have to make sure that there is sufficient drainage. A grass area that holds an excessive amount of water will make the grass weak and moss, lichen and other weeds will be encouraged to grow. Mowing is often delayed if the ground is too wet and mud patches become apparent when walked on.

Whether the lawn is to be made from seed or turf, thorough ground preparations are necessary. Once you are happy with the drainage, the next job is to dig over the soil. If the preparation is done in autumn then it is best to leave the soil rough to provide maximum exposure to the rain, frost and snow if are unlucky enough to have very cold weather. If you are sewing the seeds or laying turf in spring or summer, it is important to level the ground.

Levelling is important for obvious reasons; you cannot level the grass once it is there. On the day that you are going to lay down the seeds or the turf, make sure that the weather is good and there is no sign of rain. You then need to rake the soil down and make sure that there are no sizable stones left behind. Firm the soil by treading with the weight on your heels so that it is as even as possible and then rake one final time. This time when you rake, you need to rake at right angles to the last time you did this. Apply a dressing of fertiliser and then leave the soil alone for a further week.

By following these simple steps in preparing your garden for turf or seeds you will have a lawn to be proud of.
