LCD flat panel tv use either florescent tubes or in the new LED/LCD tvs they use LED diodes to back light the panel so you can see the video. DLP lamps usually last 1-2 years and are replaceable. florescent tubes seem to last from 2-15 years. These use a inverter/ballast to ignite the tubes and sometimes these die prematurely. Just like the ones that go in your shop lights only smaller. I have replaced hundreds (LCD panels for this problem) that have failed during the warranty and even those on the show room floor. These are not replaceable short of replacing the entire LCD panel. The new LED seems to have the longest life expectancy, but they are so new the jury is still out. But I believe these will replace all back light systems in a couple years. The fact that most use florescent tubes, I highly recommend buying a five year extended warranty.
