What lamp do I need for a horsefeild tortoise?

I have a 18 month old horsefeild tortoise, I got him yesterday (UK) The pet shop said I didn’t need a lamp, but its obvious I do after reading up on the internet. I have a lamp which clips on the side of the tortoise table, would I be able to use this with an appriopriate bulb? I need two bulbs I think, but I don’t know which ones? Is a basking bulb the same as a UVA? & I also need a UVB is this right? How far should the light be from the inside of the table? Please help! I Need to go out and buy some bulbs today and the pet shops are useless! thanks you

Depending on how far above the table you can suspend it, you may find it to be a better choice to get one of the new Mercury Vapor reptile lights. These produce both UVB and heat–quite a lot of both, so it’s important to put them at the right height above the table (monitor temps carefully). This bulb is quite expensive, but not so much when you compare it with buying 2 other bulbs and fixtures separately. Never place it closer than about 6 inches above the top of the turtle’s shell, as these lamps produce some UVC (reaches about 4 inches from the light).

If you don’t want to go that route, then you need a strong spotlight heat lamp, and a fluorescent UVB reptile light. Ignore UVA lights–the heat light can be anything, even an ordinary house bulb, as long as it can heat the basking area enough.

A thermometer will tell you how far from the table to put the light. The turtle should never be able to touch it, of course. Use one of the thermometers with a remote probe (walmart has some that are pretty cheap). Place the probe at the turtle’s basking spot–if you can arrange it, put it at the height of the top of the turtle’s shell–that’s what temps the turtle will be experiencing.
Then you can raise or lower the light to get the correct temperature.
