Exact temperatures are EXTREMELY important. Variations of a couple degrees is okay, but that’s all. If your temps are too low, you can make your snake sick or, if she has a meal on her stomach with the temps that low, she won’t be able to digest and it’ll eventually rot in her stomach… Again, VERY bad.

My suggestion would be to put a heating pad on the bottom of the warm side. Leave the ceramic bulb there, and get a thermostat to keep the temps right. The heating pad should radiate enough to keep the floor of the cool side around the right temp, but if you’re still having problems, try insulating the back and sides of the tank, and if still, you can put a smallish pad on the cool side and attach it to another thermostat to keep it at the proper cool side temp where it should be (if you go this route, check out the Herpstat by Spyder Robotics).

Better yet, you could take your snake out of the basement and put her in, say, your living room or bedroom, which I assume stay warmer than 62* during the winter.

To elaborate on the earlier suggestion of a Herpstat… The Herpstat is a proportional thermostat, but does have a non-proportional (on/off) setting. They have the Herpstat, Herpstat II, and the Herpstat Pro. The original Herpstat can only control one environment. The Herpstat II, which would be best if you choose to put extra heating elements on both sides of your snake’s tank (I’d suggest a thermostat anyway if you don’t already have one), is essentially 2 thermostats in one with separate probes, outputs, and settings. The Herpstat PRO is basically the Herpstat II, only it can control up to 4 environments. These are great. I have the Herpstat II, and it works great. I only have it controlling one tank right now, but have the second output controlling the snake’s light (you can use either side as a light timer instead of a thermostat through the settings).
