Why do ceiling fans turn in two different directions?

My ceiling fan has two different directions, and I was wondering if there is a specific reason for it.

When the fan blows down, the hot air from the upper hall, will be borne by the center Room air and lower levels will move through the walls into place. The proposal to reverse the contrary is true.
