I’d cover the box, the well-ventilated box, keep the light on the covered box and place a heating pad on low under 1/2 of the box. Keep him warm in a box (darkened simply because it’s night time now – also darkness is calming) lined with newspapers and some soft material like felt, cotton balls or velvet shaped into a nest shape. Don’t put dirt or some other material in there thinking you are imitating his environment. Sanitary conditions are most important. Now you need to feed him. He’ll die if he’s not fed. He has to be fed every 2 hrs – ’round the clock. By finding the little guy, you are responsible for him until the wildlife rehab folks can come for him, sooo … that means you will need to get up every 2 hrs tonight to check on him and feed him. Do this: crush up dried cat food and make a paste using filtered water. It needs to be watery but thick enough to stick on a chopstick (this is what I use. No need for the eyedropper or to give him plain water. Baby birds get their water from their food). Scoop the paste on to a chop stick (just a tiny little bit – on the tapered side) and touch the side of the little bird’s beak to see if you can get a open mouth “feed me” response (shouldn’t be too difficult. He is no doubt very hungry. But only feed him total about 1/8 tsp if that). He’ll gobble the chopstick down his throat. Best to make a new batch for each feeding – every 2 hrs. Only give him enough until his crop gets full but be careful not to overfeed and burst the crop. I would try to peel the shell off him but do so very, very gently. If it sticks,drip some tepid water where it sticks and try to remove it and dry him immediately. Do not let the little guy become chilled. Temps need to remain in the low 90 deg F. If you have a small temp thermometer, put it in the box. That may help you to keep him at the right temp. This is very important – keeping him warm. If the shell won’t come off with gentle help, leave it be and let the wildlife rehabilitation center handle the little bird. Good for you for giving them a call.
